Software, Websites

I’ve  put up other links to software in the past, but for now thought I would just put a page up and just add to the list.

http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/G-Lock-Blog-Finder-Download-91612.html free version only finds 50 blogs, search by keyword, blog keyword, website keywords. Have to initially fill out a  free registration to get them to send you a reg code. Paid version is 50 bucks, probably only worth it if you are really into blogging and want to increase traffic, run a site or want to keep track of various sites. It is pretty good at searching specific keywords or phrases, though the more common each particular word, the more unrelated results appear, just like on google. For example, if searching for links to this blog, one would use my username ‘silentconsort’ which is more search specific than ‘spoils of war’ . You will get fewer but more accurate results. In the free version, it probably doesn’t go back very far in time.

http://boardreader.com/ searches all web forums , can set it to search within a particular forum and exclude or only include cerain terms. Check the settings/options for how far back etc.

http://download.cnet.com/Advanced-SystemCare-Free/3000-2086_4-10407614.html– have used this for a couple years on more than one machine- free and does a ton of various jobs, spyware, checking to see if system settings have been changed, junk cleanup- not a trial –

http://www.grc.com/ go to the link that says ‘shields up’ for a free test to see if your firewall is working, see if your machine is operating in stealth or if you have open ports.

http://www.zilpy.com/  See what rents are going for in your area. Kind of a counterpart to zillow.com , the latter showing you how much your home is worth, or the average for the area- keep in mind this is including forclosures, it may actually be worth more than is shown.

http://www.toolhaus.org/ for ebayers, buyers and sellers, has download of Munin, free version, which scouts what you are looking for and puts into a graph-like chart , sortable by shipping cost, item cost, buy it now, etc.

http://www.ziepod.com/ may not be the most intensive or far reaching podcast ‘catcher’ or aggregator, but does have a search feature, you go to the link inside ziepod, if you like the content, you click on the + – if you want to add XML/RSS/podcast feeds manually from sources that don’t originate within ziepod search, you just copy wth your right mouse clicker , and  go to the subscriptions page and click ‘add podcast’, ziepod will automatically paste it into the add box. You can set your collection of feeds to delete read/listened to podcasts or RSS posts after time periods, or keep.  I know about itunes, the latest version wants to force you to download apple quicktime with the update, at 84. something MBs-and you can’t apparently opt out of the quicktime. which brings us to …

http://fosi.ural.net/    This page has been up forever in internet years- I remember his site being there in the mid to late 90’s. They keep trying to shut him down, but like Jason in the horror movies, he always manages  to come back under various mirrors. Usually there are lots of graphics and audio stuff there- utilities , HTML editors-   this isn’t cracks and keygens, he has already ‘fixed’ these.  Oh, and for the surfing sensitive- I haven’t gotten spyware or pop-ups from FOSI, but there are porn ads on his site, don’t know if the guy who cracks the software has any connection to the sites advertised, if you don’t want that on your machine, just don’t click on the ads. Downloading the programs never put pop-ups or other ‘pron’ related stuff on my machine. If you bookmark and then the site is gone, all you have to do is type in  the word  FOSI to google or  FOSI APPZ or FOSI software, you will find anoter mirror. He changes the stuff available every couple months, once he takes it down I doubt you can get it there again. I think your antivirus won’t alert on these since they are pre-cracked, unlike getting stuff from astalavista.box.sk.

http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ an alternative to the crashy and clunky  windows media player. I don’t think it has any psychedelic special effects. The whole point of the player is that it doesn’t do that stuff.

Pando- email big files up to 1 Gigabyte  free  ww.pando.com

http://www.abiword.com/ much smaller than open office, I think it even has a grammar-checker built in now. OO is a huge download, I think Abiword is less than 10 MB. Less hassle to download this than bother with searching for torrents of MS products, takes up less room-not sure if it has powerpoint or excel-like applications within- decent for a simple word processor and free.

Roboform – download it from Cnet- try to be careful where you download stuff from, just because you find the download on whatever site doesn’t mean it’s OK- try to get stuff from sites like cnet or softpedia – That is why I don’t like torrents, many times torrents have crap spyware/adware/virii, keygens or cracks that make the virus control freak out. The point of this software is so you can fill out forms automatically, and not have to re-enter every time. It does out a small toolbar on your browser. This is useful for getting free samples for stuff, which is really cool. I wish I could recommend one great site for free samples but they come and go and expire and some are scams, asking you to join up with a pay site or apply for credit cards- don’t even bother with those.  LastPass- as an add-on to firefox is great for passwords, unsure if it does addresses and form filling – this page also describes other useful add-ons for firefox- g-hacks is a great site, if a bit geeky- my only complaint is although they have tags and categories, it is blog form, and the software is not sorted out into whatever categories, utlities, desktop, business- it seems to be posted randomly  http://www.ghacks.net/2009/05/13/5-essential-firefox-extensions/#more-12798

http://www.kompozer.net/ free  KompoZer is a complete web authoring system that combines web file management and easy-to-use WYSIWYG web page editing. KompoZer is designed to be extremely easy to use, making it ideal for non-technical computer users who want to create an attractive, professional-looking web site without needing to know HTML or web coding.

should add browser Seamonkey- based on the old netscape navigator code, it has an integrated email client, and lots of other functions- sure you can find the old NN online, but it  lacks the ability to surf/open many sites as the code is not compatible with the newer stuff on websites  http://www.seamonkey-project.org/
